BEIJING—China's gross domestic product rose 7.7% from a year earlier in the first quarter, down from growth of 7.9% in the fourth quarter of last year, China's National Bureau of Statistics said Monday.
The increase was slower than a median 8% gain forecast by 14 economists in a Dow Jones Newswires survey.
The Chinese economy expanded 1.6% from the previous quarter on a seasonally adjusted basis, the statistics bureau said.
